A very fine & rare antique Victorian solid silver & gold novelty propelling pencil in the form of a spinning top. Tapering shaped sterling silver body with a 9ct gold zigzag decoration around the outside & a suspension loop & ring on the top. Pulling the bottom section of the pencil extends the four drawer telescopic mechanism & the internal pencil tip. The pencil tip has a twist action which extends & retracts the internal pencil lead mechanism. Both mechanisms are in working order. The pencil comes complete with a pencil lead in the tip. The pencil is marked on the bottom drawer with "Hamilton & Co, Calcutta" & the design registration number. The pencil is almost certainly made by Sampson Mordan & co, only this maker was making such quality novelty pencils at this time & was exported to India. Lovely collectors item.

Condition.

Excellent condition with light surface marks that are consistent with genuine age, use & polishing. There are no dings or dents & no damage. As stated above the mechanisms are in working order but due to the age & the fact that the mechanisms do wear slightly, when you close the pencil it is best to push the tip as well as the pencil to ensure it retracts back in properly. Also sometimes the bottom drawer is just a little loose when all closed back in.
